Architectural daylighting
What is architectural daylighting with polycarbonate?
Architectural daylighting brings natural light deep into a building through skylights, rooflights, atria and translucent walls, so spaces feel open, bright and healthy while using less electricity.
Polycarbonate is a high-performance, lightweight glazing material that is widely used in modern architecture for skylights, roofs and façades. It can be clear or light-diffusing, solid or multiwall, flat or curved, and it is protected against UV so it keeps its clarity and strength for years. Compared with glass, it is far lighter and much tougher, which allows large, elegant spans with slimmer structures.
For airports, malls, factories, warehouses, schools, sports halls, walkways and homes in Pakistan, well-designed daylighting means better working and shopping environments, lower lighting bills and architecture that stands out.
We do not just sell sheets. We design complete daylighting systems, from the light study and structure to the finished skylight, canopy or façade.
How it works
How a polycarbonate skylight lights a building
Watch one day. The skylight captures sunlight, diffuses it into soft even light, keeps harmful UV out, and lets the building dim its lights for most of the day.
- CaptureThe skylight collects daylight from sunrise to sunset.
- DiffuseLight-diffusing polycarbonate spreads it evenly, without glare.
- ProtectThe UV layer and multiwall design limit UV and heat gain.
- SaveArtificial lights dim or switch off, saving electricity every day.

Why polycarbonate performs, animated
Light, protection, strength and design freedom. Here is what makes polycarbonate the material of choice for modern daylighting.
Compare
Multiwall polycarbonate vs solid polycarbonate vs glass
We select the right material for each part of your building, based on span, light, heat, safety and budget.
| Property | Multiwall polycarbonate | Solid polycarbonate | Glass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Very light | Light | Heavy |
| Impact resistance | High | Very high, virtually unbreakable | Low unless laminated or toughened |
| Light | Diffused, soft and even | Clear, glass-like or diffused | Clear, can cause glare |
| Thermal insulation | Good, from air chambers | Moderate | Low for single glazing |
| Curving | Cold-curved on site | Cold or thermoformed | Only with special processing |
| Best for | Industrial rooflights, canopies, walkways, walls | Architectural skylights, domes, atria | Façades where full transparency is required |
Design and engineering
Engineered for Pakistan’s climate
Heat, strong sun, dust storms, monsoon rain and hail demand more than a standard sheet. Every ASG daylighting system is engineered for local conditions.
- Daylight and heat-gain study to choose the right tint and structure
- Structural design for wind, rain and span, with steel or aluminium frames
- UV-protected sheets and weather-tight glazing profiles
- Correct slopes, drainage and expansion allowance to prevent leaks
- Ventilated and openable options for smoke and heat release
- Integration with daylight sensors and smart lighting control

FAQs
Polycarbonate skylights and daylighting FAQs
Answers to the questions we hear most from architects, developers, factory owners and home owners.
What is a polycarbonate skylight?
A polycarbonate skylight is a roof glazing system made from polycarbonate sheets fixed in an aluminium or steel frame. It brings natural daylight into a building and is lighter and far more impact-resistant than glass.
What is the price of polycarbonate skylights and roofing in Pakistan?
The cost depends on the area, sheet type (multiwall or solid), thickness, tint, the supporting structure, the shape (flat, pitched, curved or dome) and installation height. ASG Systems provides a detailed quotation after reviewing your drawings or visiting the site.
Is polycarbonate better than glass for skylights?
For most skylights, canopies and rooflights, yes. Polycarbonate is much lighter, highly impact-resistant, can be curved and can diffuse light to avoid glare. Glass is preferred where full, distortion-free transparency is essential, such as some façades.
Will a polycarbonate skylight make the building hot?
Not when it is designed correctly. We select multiwall sheets, tints and light transmission levels that bring in daylight while limiting heat gain, and size skylights to suit Pakistan’s strong sun.
Does polycarbonate turn yellow in the sun?
Quality polycarbonate sheets have a co-extruded UV-protective layer that protects them against yellowing and loss of strength. Installing the UV side facing outwards is essential, and our teams follow this on every project.
What is the difference between multiwall and solid polycarbonate?
Multiwall polycarbonate has hollow air chambers that make it very light and better insulating, ideal for rooflights, canopies and walls. Solid polycarbonate looks like glass, is extremely strong and suits architectural skylights, domes and security glazing.
Can polycarbonate be curved?
Yes. Polycarbonate sheets can be cold-curved on site within the manufacturer’s minimum radius, allowing barrel vaults, arched canopies and walkways without special glass processing.
Will polycarbonate roofing leak in the monsoon?
Leaks are prevented by correct slope, proper glazing profiles and gaskets, sealed sheet ends, expansion allowance and good drainage. Our designs include these details as standard.
How do you clean and maintain polycarbonate skylights?
Clean with mild soap and water and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh solvents. Regular cleaning keeps light transmission high, especially in dusty areas.
Can skylights work with smart lighting to save energy?
Yes. With daylight sensors and lighting control, artificial lights dim or switch off automatically when enough daylight enters through the skylights, reducing electricity use during the day.
