What is a boom barrier?
A boom barrier, also called a traffic barrier, parking barrier or barrier gate, is a motorised arm that lifts to let an authorised vehicle through and lowers again behind it. It is the fastest and most common way to control vehicle entry and exit at a gate, car park or toll lane.
An automatic boom barrier is more than an arm and a motor. It works together with a controller, vehicle detection loops, safety photocells, traffic lights and an identification device such as an RFID reader, ANPR camera, remote or ticket machine. Together they decide who may enter, open the lane in seconds, keep everyone else out and record every movement.
Boom barriers control traffic. They are not designed to physically stop a vehicle that is forcing its way in. For high-threat sites, we combine barriers with road blockers, bollards and tyre killers.
- 1Barrier arm (boom)Red-and-white striped arm, with lengths for single and double lanes and optional LED lights.
- 2Cabinet, motor and controllerHeavy-duty drive that lifts and lowers the arm, with manual release during power failure.
- 3Traffic lightRed and green signal tells drivers when to stop and when to go.
- 4RFID reader or ANPR cameraIdentifies the vehicle by windscreen tag or number plate before the arm opens.
- 5Safety photocellsAn invisible beam stops the arm from closing while a vehicle or person is under it.
- 6Vehicle detection loopA loop cut into the road senses the vehicle, arms the lane and closes the barrier after it passes.
How an automatic boom barrier works
Watch one authorised vehicle arrive. The loop detects it, the reader identifies it, the light turns green, the arm lifts, the car passes and the barrier closes safely behind it.
Detect
The vehicle drives onto the detection loop, which wakes the lane.
Identify
An ANPR camera reads the plate, or an RFID reader reads the windscreen tag, and access rights are checked.
Open
The light turns green and the arm lifts. Photocells keep it open while the car is under it.
Close & log
Once the car has passed, the arm lowers and the entry is saved with time, plate and lane.
Types of boom barriers we install
Every entrance is different. We choose the barrier by lane width, traffic volume, speed and the way users will be identified.
Standard automatic boom barrier
The everyday barrier for society gates, offices, hospitals and factories.
- Single-lane entrances and exits
- Anti-crush safety
- Manual release in power failure
High-speed boom barrier
For toll plazas and busy lanes where traffic must not queue.
- Rapid open and close cycle
- Built for continuous, high-cycle use
- Proven at Islamabad Toll Plaza
Parking barrier gate
Car park entry and exit, linked with ticket dispensers and parking management.
- Tickets, cards or RFID
- Works with pay stations
- Malls, clubs, hospitals and plazas
Long-arm barrier for wide lanes
One barrier across a wide or double lane at society and industrial gates.
- Arm length matched to the lane
- Arm rest support on the far side
- Signal lights for both directions
How your boom barrier knows who to let in
A barrier is only as smart as the way it identifies vehicles. We match the method to your users: residents, staff, visitors or paying customers.
RFID long-range tags
A tag on the windscreen is read from several metres away, so residents and staff drive through without stopping.
ANPR number plate recognition
A camera reads the plate, opens for registered vehicles, flags blacklisted ones and stores a photo of each entry.
Ticket and card
Ticket dispensers and card readers for car parks, linked with pay stations and parking management.
Remote control
Handheld remotes for homes, small offices and staff car parks.
Guard booth push button
The guard opens the lane for visitors from the booth or the control room.
Visitor passes
Pre-registered visitor passes, CNIC and plate capture and time-limited access, with a full visitor record.
Safety features on every barrier we install
A barrier must never close on a car or a person, and it must keep working in Pakistan’s heat, dust and load shedding.
- Vehicle detection loopsStop the arm from closing on a car and close it automatically once the vehicle has passed.
- Safety photocellsAn infrared beam across the lane keeps the arm up while anything is under it.
- Anti-crush safetyThe arm reverses if it meets an obstacle while closing.
- Traffic lightsClear red and green signals reduce tailgating and accidents at busy lanes.
- Manual releaseThe arm can be lifted by hand during a power failure or emergency.
- Battery and UPS backupBackup options keep barriers working during load shedding.

Boom barrier, gate, bollard, road blocker or tyre killer?
Not every entrance needs a road blocker, and not every site is safe with a barrier alone. This is how they compare.
| System | Main purpose | Security level | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boom barrier | Fast lane control for high traffic | Standard | Societies, car parks, offices, hospitals, toll plazas |
| Sliding / swing gate | Closes the full opening, day and night | Medium | Homes, factories, campuses, warehouses |
| Automatic bollards | Protects pedestrian areas and building fronts | High | VIP entrances, banks, malls, public squares |
| Road blocker | Physically stops a vehicle at the gate | Very high | Government, defence, embassies, airports |
| Tyre killer | Stops wrong-way or forced entry | High | Exits, checkpoints, industrial perimeters |

Boom barrier and traffic barrier FAQs
What is the price of a boom barrier in Pakistan?
The price depends on the arm length, the barrier speed and duty cycle, the identification method (remote, RFID, ANPR or ticketing), safety accessories such as loops, photocells and traffic lights, and the civil work at your site. ASG Systems offers a free site survey and gives you a detailed quotation for your exact entrance.
Is a traffic barrier the same as a boom barrier?
Yes. Boom barrier, traffic barrier, parking barrier and barrier gate are different names for the same system: a motorised arm that lifts to let authorised vehicles through and lowers to stop the rest.
How fast does an automatic boom barrier open?
A typical automated entrance opens for an authorised vehicle in about 3 to 6 seconds, including identification. High-speed barriers are much faster: at Islamabad Toll Plaza, the barriers we installed open and close in under 1.3 seconds.
Will the barrier work during load shedding?
Yes. We offer battery and UPS backup options so barriers keep working during power cuts, and every barrier has a manual release so the arm can be lifted by hand in an emergency.
Can a boom barrier work with RFID, ANPR and parking systems?
Yes. Our barriers work with RFID long-range readers, ANPR cameras, remotes, ticket dispensers and card readers, and connect to access control software, CCTV and parking management.
Is a boom barrier enough for a high-security site?
A boom barrier controls traffic but is not designed to stop a vehicle that is forcing entry. For government, defence, banks and other high-threat sites, we combine barriers with road blockers, bollards and tyre killers.
Do you install boom barriers outside Lahore?
Yes. We install in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and other cities, including DHA, Bahria Town and other housing societies, and take on projects anywhere in Pakistan.
Which barrier brand do you use?
On projects such as Islamabad Toll Plaza and Khayaban-e-Amin, we worked with technology partner Centurion. We recommend the right equipment for your traffic, speed and budget during the site survey.
