The basics

What is a hydraulic road blocker?

A road blocker, also called a wedge barrier, is a heavy steel plate that rises out of the road to physically stop a vehicle. When an authorised vehicle arrives, it lowers flat into the road so the vehicle can drive over it.

Unlike a boom barrier, which only controls traffic, a road blocker is built to stop a vehicle that tries to force its way in. That is why it is used at high-security entrances, usually together with a boom barrier for everyday traffic control.

A hydraulic power unit raises and lowers the plate, while a controller links it to access control, detection loops, traffic lights and an emergency button.

How it works

How a hydraulic road blocker works

The blocker stays up by default and lowers only for authorised vehicles.

1

Vehicle stops

The vehicle stops in front of the raised blocker and red light.

2

Identification

The guard, RFID, plate recognition or remote confirms the vehicle.

3

Blocker lowers

The hydraulic unit lowers the plate flat and the light turns green.

4

Blocker rises

After the vehicle passes, the blocker rises and the lane is sealed again.

Types

Types of road blockers we supply

The right model depends on your threat level, ground conditions and traffic.

Surface-mounted road blockers

Bolted on the road with no deep excavation.

  • Fast installation
  • Ideal where digging is difficult
  • Temporary or permanent

Shallow-mount road blockers

Set in a shallow pit, flush with the road when lowered.

  • Low profile
  • Smooth drive-over
  • Less civil work

Deep-mount road blockers

Installed in a deeper foundation for maximum strength.

  • Highest security
  • Heavy vehicles
  • Permanent entrances

Crash-rated road blockers

Designed and tested to stop a vehicle at speed.

  • Government and military
  • Airports and embassies
  • Banks and data centres

Emergency fast operation (EFO)

Rises in seconds when the emergency button is pressed.

  • Rapid threat response
  • Guard room control
  • Backup power option

  • Layered security
  • Synchronised control

Features

Safety and control features

Road blockers are powerful machines, so safety is designed in from the start.

  • Vehicle detection loopsStop the blocker from rising under a vehicle and confirm when it has passed.
  • Traffic lights and warning stripesMake the blocker clearly visible to drivers day and night.
  • Manual hand pumpLowers the blocker during a power failure.
  • Emergency fast operationRaises the blocker in seconds in an emergency.
  • Access control integrationWorks with RFID, plate recognition, boom barriers, intercoms and CCTV.
  • Drainage designFoundations designed so rainwater never stops the blocker working.

FAQs

Road blocker FAQs

What is the price of a hydraulic road blocker in Pakistan?

The price depends on the lane width, the security level, surface, shallow or deep mounting, emergency fast operation, access control and the civil work at your site. ASG Systems offers a free site survey and a detailed quotation for your entrance.

What is the difference between a road blocker and a boom barrier?

A boom barrier controls traffic with a lifting arm but cannot stop a vehicle that forces its way in. A road blocker is a heavy steel plate that physically stops the vehicle. Many sites use both together.

Does a road blocker work during a power failure?

Yes. Hydraulic road blockers include a manual hand pump to lower the plate, and they can be connected to backup power.

How long does a road blocker take to rise?

Standard models rise in a few seconds. Emergency fast operation models rise even faster when the emergency button is pressed.

Do road blockers need deep excavation?

Not always. Surface-mounted road blockers need no deep pit, while shallow and deep-mount models are set in the road for a flush finish and higher strength.

Where has ASG Systems installed road blockers?

Our road blocker projects include Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore and NDMA Headquarters in Islamabad.
