How bikes and cars are recognised at campus checkpoints

Overview

Executive Summary

The University of Lahore is one of Pakistan’s largest private universities, with a busy campus seeing constant bike and car traffic from students, faculty, and staff throughout the day. A campus of this scale needed vehicle access control that could do more than simply raise and lower a barrier—it needed to recognize regular campus members automatically, log attendance, and keep a clear record of visitors entering the premises.

ASG Systems Pakistan was engaged as the solutions and service provider responsible for planning, supplying, and installing an RFID and e-tag based access control system for both bikes and cars across campus checkpoints—integrated with attendance tracking and visitor management software—working with technology partner Centurion for the automatic boom barriers.

The brief

The Challenge

As a large, busy university campus, UOL needed access control that balanced daily convenience with genuine security:

  1. Handle high-volume bike and car traffic at multiple campus checkpoints without long queues between classes.
  2. Recognize registered students, faculty, and staff automatically rather than relying on manual ID checks at every gate.
  3. Tie vehicle access into attendance tracking, so entry records could support attendance verification.
  4. Give security a clear way to register and track visitors who are not part of the regular campus community.

What we delivered

The Solution: RFID & E-Tag Access, Attendance & Visitor Management

ASG Systems Pakistan installed automatic boom barriers at campus checkpoints, paired with RFID and e-tag readers, attendance integration, and visitor management software—covering both bike and car traffic across the university.

Component 01

RFID & E-Tag Reader Access

At each checkpoint, an RFID and e-tag reader identifies registered vehicles automatically. Students and staff with a valid card or e-tag are recognized at the barrier, with the reader kiosk branded by ASG Systems Pakistan for the University of Lahore, logging each entry as it happens.

Component 02

Campus Vehicle & Bike Checkpoints

Guard booths paired with automatic boom barriers control the main campus access roads, managing the steady flow of bikes and cars entering and leaving throughout the day.

Component 03

Multi-Lane Barriers with CCTV

At higher-traffic checkpoints, multiple Centurion boom barriers run side by side, each paired with a CCTV camera, so several lanes of bike and car traffic can be processed and recorded at once.

Component 04

Building-Level & Exit Checkpoints

Beyond the main campus gates, additional barriers control access at specific buildings, such as the Faculty of Law, and at secondary exit points—keeping the same RFID-based standard consistent across the whole campus.

Component 05

Attendance Integration & Visitor Management Software

Every RFID and e-tag read at the barrier feeds into the campus’s attendance tracking, giving the university a reliable record of entry and exit for registered members. Alongside this, visitor management software registers anyone entering who isn’t part of the regular RFID/e-tag system, giving campus security a clear record of visitors on the premises at any time.

Partners

Technology Partner: Centurion

To equip campus checkpoints with dependable, high-frequency-use hardware, ASG Systems Pakistan partnered with Centurion as the technology and equipment partner for the project. This ensured a consistent standard of automatic boom barrier across every checkpoint, integrated with the RFID, e-tag, attendance, and visitor management systems built around it.

How we did it

Implementation Approach

  1. 1Site survey across main campus checkpoints, building-level entrances, and exit gates to plan barrier and reader placement.
  2. 2Procurement and staging of Centurion automatic boom barriers for each checkpoint.
  3. 3Integration of RFID card readers and e-tag detection with the barrier control and campus attendance systems.
  4. 4Deployment of visitor management software for registering and tracking non-affiliated visitors at entry.
  5. 5Civil and electrical works for barrier foundations, reader kiosk power, and CCTV integration at multi-lane checkpoints.
  6. 6Installation, calibration, and functional testing of every barrier and access reader across campus.
  7. 7Coordination with university administration for credential enrollment and a smooth go-live in 2020.

Outcome

Results & Impact

The completed installation gave the University of Lahore an automated, campus-wide access control system:

  • Automatic, hands-free checkpoint access for registered bikes and cars via RFID card and e-tag recognition.
  • Attendance records generated directly from vehicle entry, supporting the university’s attendance verification.
  • A clear, software-based record of visitors entering the premises, improving campus security oversight.
  • A consistent, Centurion-backed barrier standard across main gates, building-level checkpoints, and exits.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What access control system did ASG Systems Pakistan install at the University of Lahore?

RFID card and e-tag based access control for both bikes and cars across campus checkpoints, integrated with attendance tracking and visitor management software, completed in 2020.

How does RFID and e-tag access work for a university campus?

Registered students, staff, and vehicles carry an RFID card or vehicle-mounted e-tag that a reader at each checkpoint detects automatically, raising the barrier for recognized credentials while logging the entry.

What does the visitor management software do at the University of Lahore?

It registers visitors who are not part of the regular RFID/e-tag system at entry, giving campus security a record of who is on the premises.

Who was the technology partner for the University of Lahore project?

Centurion supplied the automatic boom barriers used across the campus checkpoints.
